Educate Africa Institute Commends Education Minister for Cancelling Teacher Licensure Exams – William Boadi
Educate Africa Institute (EAI) warmly commends the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, for the decisive directive to abolish the Teacher Licensure Examinations by August 30, 2025, as part of broader reforms to strengthen teacher qualification frameworks in Ghana.
This bold decision reflects a listening government and aligns with EAI’s long-standing advocacy for the cancellation of these licensure exams, which were introduced under the previous administration. For years, EAI has argued that it is unnecessary for graduates, who have completed rigorous four-year academic and professional training in our universities and colleges of education, to be subjected to additional licensure examinations merely a year after graduation before being permitted to teach.
We have consistently maintained that teacher quality should be assessed through structured academic training, supervised fieldwork, and continuous professional development, rather than an additional barrier that only frustrates graduates and delays their contribution to Ghana’s education system.
The Executive Director of EAI, William Boadi, expressed satisfaction with this development, noting that the decision will reduce financial and psychological burdens on graduates and support a seamless transition of trained teachers into classrooms across the country.
“We are grateful to the Minister for Education for demonstrating leadership in listening to stakeholders and acting in the best interest of teacher trainees and Ghana’s education sector. It is a progressive step that will enable thousands of graduates to contribute their skills and passion to improving quality education in our communities,” Mr. Boadi stated.
Educate Africa Institute looks forward to engaging with the Ministry of Education and the National Teaching Council (NTC) in developing the new framework that prioritises academic competence and practical readiness while ensuring quality teaching standards across Ghana.
We encourage all affected candidates to take advantage of the final opportunity to re-sit their licensure exams before the phase-out and commend the Ministry for providing this transitional window.
Together, we can build a stronger, learner-focused, and teacher-friendly education system for Ghana.
