The Government’s Reset Agenda Must Prioritize Teachers’ Welfare – William Boadi, EAI

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) is calling on the government to prioritize teacher welfare with concrete policies that reflect the same level of commitment shown toward students. While education reforms often focus on students’ access, performance, and infrastructure, the well-being of teachers who are the backbone of the system remains neglected.

Teachers across Ghana continue to face low salaries, delayed payments, lack of incentives, poor working conditions, and inadequate resources. These challenges have demoralized many educators, leading to reduced motivation and lower productivity in the classroom. Caring for teachers is caring for the future of education.

As the government embarks on a national reset for Ghana, this must holistically include teachers’ conditions of service and welfare. Teachers are really suffering economically, and this hardship has deep social and emotional consequences. The financial strain, job insecurity, and poor working conditions have negatively impacted their mental health, family life, and overall well-being. A demoralized teacher cannot give their best to students, which ultimately weakens the entire education system.

EAI believes that improving teacher welfare must be central to education policy discussions. The government must move beyond token gestures and ensure sustainable improvements, including:

1. A fair and competitive salary structure that acknowledges the critical role of teachers.

2. A transparent career progression framework that guarantees timely promotions and professional growth.

3. Timely payment of salaries and allowances to prevent financial distress.

4. Provision of quality teaching and learning resources to enhance productivity.

5. Teacher-friendly policies that address job security, workplace conditions, and workload management.

While we acknowledge the government’s efforts in education reforms, it is inconsistent to prioritize students’ welfare while ignoring the struggles of those who teach them. The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) is urging the government to integrate teacher welfare policies into the upcoming National Education Forum and ensure that teachers are treated as essential stakeholders in Ghana’s education transformation agenda.

A strong education system thrives on motivated, well-supported teachers. Ghana’s teachers deserve respect, better conditions, and real investment in their professional growth. Investing in teachers means investing in the nation’s future!
