The Government Must Pay WAEC’s Debt to Ensure the Timely Release of Results – William Boadi, EAI

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) is calling on His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, to urgently intervene and settle the Government of Ghana’s outstanding debt of GHS 118 million owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). This substantial financial obligation has severely compromised the council’s ability to process and release examination results on time, leaving thousands of students and parents in a state of uncertainty.

According to credible reports, WAEC is grappling with operational challenges caused by broken or malfunctioning equipment that require immediate repairs or replacement. Unfortunately, the council’s ability to resolve these issues has been hindered by its current financial constraints, exacerbated by the unpaid government debt. The resulting delays in processing examination results have far-reaching consequences, particularly for students awaiting their results for admission into tertiary institutions or employment opportunities.

The Executive Director of Educate Africa Institute, Mr. William Boadi, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: “The government must treat this matter as a top priority. Education is the backbone of national development, and any delay in releasing examination results undermines the progress of our youth. Government debts to WAEC must be settled immediately to restore the council’s operational efficiency and ensure the timely release of results.”

EAI further highlights that this situation underscores the need for sustainable funding mechanisms for WAEC to prevent such recurring crises. A robust and reliable financial structure will enable WAEC to fulfill its mandate efficiently without relying on unpredictable financial interventions.

As a leading advocacy group championing quality education in Africa, the Educate Africa Institute respectfully urges President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to prioritize this pressing issue. Ghana’s youth, the future of our nation, deserve a dependable and efficient educational system that delivers results promptly to advance their academic and professional aspirations.

The future of thousands of students hangs in the balance, and a swift response from government leadership is critical to averting further disruptions and restoring confidence in the educational system.

Signed,

William Boadi
