SUPREME COURT’S RULING ON THE DELEGATE SYSTEM IS A VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY AND INTERNAL PARTY REFORMS

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) warmly commends the Supreme Court of Ghana for its landmark ruling declaring the delegate voting system for the selection of political party candidates unconstitutional and directing political parties to adopt universal suffrage for all members in good standing. This historic judgment marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey, reinforcing the constitutional values of equality, fairness, inclusiveness, and participatory governance.
For many years, the delegate system has been criticized for concentrating decision-making power in the hands of a few delegates, thereby creating opportunities for vote-buying, undue influence, and the monetization of internal party elections. The Supreme Court’s decision presents a timely opportunity to restore confidence in Ghana’s political system by ensuring that every eligible party member has an equal voice in selecting candidates. EAI believes this reform will encourage issue-based campaigns, reduce the influence of money in politics, and promote merit, competence, and visionary leadership.
The Institute further believes that expanding voting rights to all members in good standing will strengthen internal party democracy, improve transparency and accountability, and foster greater grassroots participation. Political aspirants will now be required to engage broadly with party members, listen to their concerns, and present policies that genuinely reflect the aspirations of the rank and file. This will ultimately produce leaders with stronger legitimacy and a deeper commitment to public service.
While acknowledging that the transition to universal suffrage may require political parties to strengthen their membership databases and electoral systems, EAI is confident that these administrative adjustments are a worthwhile investment in Ghana’s democratic future. We therefore urge all political parties, state institutions, civil society organizations, and citizens to embrace this reform in the spirit of democratic progress. The Educate Africa Institute once again applauds the Supreme Court for this courageous and visionary decision, which has the potential to deepen democracy, strengthen political accountability, and safeguard the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people.
