President Nana Addo Must Settle Educational Legacy Debts Before the End of His Tenure – EAI Urges Government
The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) is urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prioritize the immediate settlement of all outstanding educational legacy debts before the end of his tenure. This call comes in response to mounting challenges within the education sector, including delayed payments to schools and essential stakeholders, which have hindered the smooth operation of educational institutions and jeopardized the future of Ghanaian students.
Key stakeholders, including the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), have raised alarms over the government’s indebtedness. CHASS has decried the lack of funds to support operational expenses, while WAEC has warned that unpaid arrears could disrupt the administration and results of the 2024 WASSCE. Similarly, CETAG has threatened a nationwide strike over delayed compensation, a move that could paralyze teacher training colleges.
The Executive Director of EAI, William Boadi, emphasized that these debts if left unresolved, could have dire consequences for Ghana’s education system. He noted that clearing these arrears would reduce tensions among stakeholders and restore stability to the sector. “Education is the cornerstone of national development, and the government must act decisively to fulfill its financial obligations to WAEC, CHASS, and CETAG,” he stated.
Although the president is nearing the end of his tenure, he mustn’t leave these debts unresolved. EAI recommends immediate debt settlement, transparent budget allocation, and ongoing stakeholder engagement as critical steps to address these issues. Failure to act not only undermines the quality of education but also threatens the credibility of Ghana’s educational system on a global scale. The Institute remains steadfast in advocating for accountability and sustainable solutions to ensure a brighter future for Ghanaian students.
