🚩AFRICAN UNION DAY STATEMENT*
“What Are We Celebrating?”
Today marks African Union Day, a day dedicated to celebrating unity, progress, freedom, and the resilience of the African people. But looking at the current state of the continent, one painful question keeps arising: What are we celebrating?
Africa remains blessed with abundant resources, talented youth, and great potential, yet many Africans continue to suffer from unemployment, poverty, insecurity, poor leadership, and lack of opportunities. Thousands risk their lives daily in search of survival outside the continent because Africa is still struggling to contain and empower its own people.
What is even more disturbing are the recurring tensions and attacks against fellow Africans in *South Africa* and other parts of the continent. This directly contradicts the vision of African unity and brotherhood upon which the African Union was founded. No African should feel like a foreigner in Africa.
African Union Day should therefore not only be a moment of celebration, but a moment of reflection, accountability, and urgent action. Africa must move beyond speeches and ceremonies and focus on development, industrialization, education, peace, job creation, and true continental unity.
Until Africa becomes a continent where Africans can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity, the question will remain: What are we truly celebrating?
