ST. MARY’S SHS ELEVATES READING CULTURE WITH MERRIES Wi-Fi NEWSPAPER LAUNCH – William Boadi, EAI

Date: 2nd October, 2025

Venue: Rev. Mother Bernadette Assembly Hall, St. Mary’s SHS, Korle Gonno – Accra

On Thursday, 2nd October 2025, St. Mary’s Senior High School, Korle Gonno, Accra, successfully launched its official school newspaper, Merries Wi-Fi. The newspaper, proudly produced by students, represents a remarkable transformation of what was once a gossip trend into an academic and innovative communication platform.

Historically, “Merries Wi-Fi” was known within the school community as a gossip label among students. However, under the visionary leadership of the Headmistress, Ms. Philomena Owusu-Ansah, and with the support of the Read Wide Society, the St. Mary’s Old Girls Association (SMOGAN), and the dedicated teaching staff, the initiative has been redefined into a purposeful project. The newspaper is designed to encourage students to read widely, conduct research, and develop strong literacy skills and effort that will undoubtedly contribute to improved academic performance. We had fun alongside.

The launch event took place at the Rev. Mother Bernadette Assembly Hall and was chaired by Mr. Angel Cabonu, President of NAGRAT, who also serves as a teacher at St. Mary’s SHS. The ceremony was well attended by staff and students of the school, with additional participation from Accra Academy Senior High School. There was also strong representation from the old students, led by the Global President of SMOGANS.

The official launch was jointly performed by the Chairperson, the Headmistress, and the SMOGANS Global President. A highlight of the ceremony was the historic purchase of the first copy of Merries Wi-Fi for GHC 11,000 by NAGRAT and the SMOGANS Global President. Following this, staff, SRC executives, Accra Academy SHS, and others also purchased copies to provide financial support for sustaining the project.

I had the honor of representing the Educate Africa Institute (EAI) at the event, in addition to my role as a staff member of the school. As Executive Director of EAI, I wish to commend this innovative and academic project, which will not only facilitate teaching and learning but also uplift the image and prestige of St. Mary’s Senior High School. Indeed, as a Category A institution, it is our collective responsibility as staff to uphold and advance the high standards for which the school is renowned.

Special commendation goes to the Headmistress, the patrons of the project, the hardworking staff, PTA and the students who have made this vision a reality. Merries Wi-Fi is a testament to the creativity and determination of the St. Mary’s community and stands as a beacon of academic innovation worth emulating.

Kudos to all who contributed to this success.

Veritus! Veritas!!
