Hon. Joseph Kwame Kumah Applauds President Mahama’s Free Sanitary Pads Initiative on Peace FM

Hon. Joseph Kwame Kumah, Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, has publicly endorsed President John Dramani Mahama’s newly launched Free Sanitary Pads Programme. In an interview with Peace FM, the MP praised the initiative as a game-changing social intervention aimed at supporting schoolgirls and promoting menstrual hygiene nationwide.

The Free Sanitary Pads Programme, rolled out under President Mahama’s current administration, seeks to address the long-standing issue of absenteeism among female students due to the lack of menstrual hygiene products. By providing free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, the government is ensuring that girls do not miss valuable instructional hours during their menstrual cycles.

Hon. Kumah emphasized that this initiative will significantly boost the confidence and academic performance of young girls, especially those from deprived communities. He noted that access to sanitary products is a basic necessity, not a luxury, and commended President Mahama for prioritizing the health and education of young girls.

He further highlighted the programme’s potential for job creation. Echoing sentiments shared by traditional leaders such as Nana Nyantekyiwaa Amoako Asare, Queen Mother of Obuasi-Gausu, Hon. Kumah called for the establishment of sanitary pad production factories across all regions. This, he said, would not only sustain the supply of pads but also create employment opportunities for many young people, particularly senior high school graduates.

Hon. Kumah urged other policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders to rally behind President Mahama’s vision and ensure the long-term success of the initiative. He concluded by stating that the Free Sanitary Pads Programme reflects the President’s deep commitment to gender equality, educational empowerment, and public health.

The programme is already being hailed as one of the most impactful social policies under President Mahama’s current term, positioning Ghana as a leader in menstrual health management in Africa.
