We Don’t Want To Experience Power Outages Before, During, and After the Elections – William Boadi, EAI.
Educate Africa Institute (EAI) has observed with concern certain recurring issues during elections in Ghana, which threaten the integrity of the electoral process.
Notably, during past elections, several constituencies experienced unexplained power outages (commonly referred to as “light outs”) during critical moments of vote counting. A striking example was the incident in the Essikado-Ketan constituency during the last four years’ elections. Such occurrences raise suspicions of electoral manipulation, as power is often restored only after alleged malpractices have taken place.
EAI strongly urges the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other relevant stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted power supply during elections. Any disruptions undermine the transparency of the process and diminish public confidence in the outcome. A reliable power supply is fundamental to achieving free, fair, and credible elections.
Additionally, we have observed cases of military harassment in parts of the Volta Region, particularly in border towns, during elections. Such actions intimidate voters and create an atmosphere of fear, which can discourage eligible citizens from exercising their right to vote. EAI calls on security agencies to uphold professionalism, neutrality, and respect for human rights during elections. The military’s presence must be for protection, not intimidation.
We caution all stakeholders to prioritize the principles of transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in the upcoming elections. EAI remains committed to promoting a peaceful and credible electoral process in Ghana.
