Should Senior High School Students Be Allowed to Use Mobile Phones in the 21st Century? – William Boadi, EAI

In today’s digital era, mobile phones have become essential tools for education and personal development. For Senior High School (SHS) students, these devices provide access to a wealth of online resources such as e-books, educational videos, and learning platforms, which can enhance academic performance. Moreover, mobile phones enable students to develop digital literacy and technological skills, both of which are essential in the modern job market. Additionally, they offer a reliable means of communication, ensuring that students can contact their parents or guardians in emergencies, while also fostering collaboration and research through tools like WhatsApp study groups and cloud-based platforms.

However, the use of mobile phones among SHS students is not without its challenges. Distractions from social media, gaming, and other non-educational apps can interfere with learning and focus. Moreover, increased screen time may lead to addiction and health issues such as eye strain and poor sleep patterns. Mobile phones can also be tools for academic dishonesty during exams and assignments, while the risk of cyberbullying and exposure to harmful online content remains significant. Furthermore, the financial burden of acquiring smartphones could create social inequalities among students, as not all families can afford such devices.

To address these challenges, a middle-ground approach is essential. Schools can introduce structured policies that allow controlled use of mobile phones strictly for educational purposes. Designated times and zones for phone usage can ensure minimal disruption during classes, while digital literacy education can equip students with the skills to use phones responsibly and safely. Schools could also consider providing school-monitored devices with pre-installed educational apps to ensure uniformity and fairness. Strict monitoring and enforcement of rules will be crucial to preventing misuse and maintaining focus on academics.

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) believes that integrating mobile phones into SHS education is vital in this age of digitalization. However, this must be done with strict regulations to maximize benefits while mitigating risks. As Ghana moves forward in its educational reforms, policymakers must consider this proposal to prepare students for the demands of the 21st century, ensuring they are equipped with the tools and skills needed for global competitiveness.
