Educate Africa Institute Condemns Chaos in Parliament: A Disgrace to Democracy
Educate Africa Institute (EAI) strongly condemns the unruly and disgraceful behavior displayed in Parliament during the recent ministerial vetting. The destruction of microphones, tables, and other parliamentary equipment is an embarrassment to Ghana’s democracy and a betrayal of the trust the people have placed in their elected representatives.
Parliament is meant to be a beacon of leadership, intellectual discourse, and national development—not a battleground for reckless and destructive behavior. The chaos witnessed not only undermines the credibility of our legislature but also sets a terrible precedent for the next generation of leaders. How can these very Members of Parliament (MPs) condemn the vandalism of party offices by youth when they themselves engage in similar acts of destruction within the sacred halls of Parliament?
Beyond the physical damage, the negative implications of these actions cannot be erased. National Service personnel and interns stationed in Parliament are watching. They are expected to learn from the honorable members, but what values are they absorbing from such misconduct? If our leaders cannot control their tempers in a formal setting, how can they demand discipline from citizens?
We also find it disappointing that some MPs used the vetting process to ask irrelevant and trivial questions that had no bearing on the ministerial appointments. Parliament is not a place for personal grudges or populist antics—it is a serious institution tasked with assessing competence, integrity, and vision. Ghana deserves better.
To those involved in this shameful act, bow down your heads in shame! The people voted in peace, but your actions are breaking the nation into pieces. While apologies may be offered, they cannot undo the damage inflicted on the integrity of our democracy.
EAI urges all leaders to rise above partisanship, uphold professionalism, and protect the dignity of our institutions. Ghana must move forward, not backward. The youth are watching, and the future of our democracy depends on the example set by those in power.
Signed,
William Boadi
